Significance In American History

The Underground Railroad helped to free thousands of slaves following the Fugitive Slave Act. It was one of the first large acts actively defying the laws and acts in the south, with thousands of people working together for the rights of their fellow humans. These people had rejected the pro-slavery ideologies of the time. The railroad instigated slave-owners and prompted for the cruelty against African-Americans to end, becoming a direct cause of the Civil War.

Harriet Tubman was considered the 'Moses' of her people, freeing many

from slavery. Once free, she had actively tried to free other slaves, becoming a 'conductor' in the underground railroad. Even after the Fugitive Slave Act, she continued on. Tubman also became a nurse and spy for the Union during the Civil War. Harriet Tubman had dedicated her free life to ending slavery.
